Hair loss can be a bit of a sensitive topic for some guys, and for those looking a solution, there’s a lot of myths out there that still get lots of attention, and have a large group believing that they’re true. 18|8 Fine Men’s Salon of Westwood is here to bust some of the most common myths about hair loss in men, so you can rest easy.

Taking Natural Supplements Will Help

Myth – There are a lot of natural remedies out there that will claim that they can help prevent or slow hair loss, there is actually no clinical evidence that any natural supplements have any effect on the hair loss process. Some common supplements are palmetto, pygeum africanum, and stinging nettle. If you have someone trying to suggest these as treatment, you may want to steer clear.

Wearing Baseball Caps Will Cause Baldness

Myth – The idea behind this myth is that the baseball cap is pushing your hair down, causing friction and pulling out hair.  While you may find some hairs in your hat after you’ve been wearing it, it’s most likely some hair that just naturally fell off your head instead of being pulled out. In order to actually cause hair loss, your hat would need to be on super tight to the point where it would be unbearable, in order to cause the friction necessary to start pulling out your hair and cause actual damage.

Baldness Is Inherited From Your Mother’s Side

Myth – Hair loss depends on your genes, and not just from your mother’s side. If someone in your family has experienced hair loss on either side of your family, it’s possible for that gene to be passed down to you.  Either way, it’s not your parent’s fault! They didn’t choose to have that gene passed down to them either.

Stress Causes Hair Loss

Myth – Regular amounts of stress, such as stress from work, usually isn’t enough to cause hair loss.  Only situation of extreme stress, such as women giving birth, or someone experiencing a traumatic event, has evident hair loss been observed. While you may not need to worry about stress causing you to lose your hair, stress is tied to a number of other health problems, so do your best to manage it.
