men's grooming hacks

Here we are, in the midst of the fairest season of them all. Summer is the season for living big and making the most of all of the extra sunshine and daylight. To make sure you’re looking and feeling your best, we’re excited to share ten handy men’s grooming hacks you can’t live without this summer.

1. Regiment Trimming Your Toenails

In summer, flip flops and sandals tend to go with everything, from jeans to trunks, and work slacks. They’re the Hawaiian shirt of shoes and feel amazing. That’s all fair and well, but you’ve got to balance this freedom with some regular nail maintenance. Nothing ruins a classy, casual outfit like a set of potentially deadly ostrich claws. The best way to take control of the situation is to build regular toenail clippings into your weekly grooming cycle. If that’s you, pick a day and commit to spending the extra five minutes trimming your nails. It’ll prevent any alarming stares and keep ingrown nails at bay.

This is a good segue into our next point…

2. Beware: Farmer Tans Ahead

It’s true what they say: too much of anything can be a bad thing. As much as we love our flip flops and sandals, daily use can lead to some freaky tan lines. Unless you’re the type who wears these like badges of honor, we’d recommend a base layer of sunscreen on your feet.

3. Oil Your Ears

Ear wax is gross and unavoidable, especially if you spending time in the ocean or the Carlsbad lagoon. That’s just a reality you have to accept. Contrary to popular belief, earbuds are not a good solution to this. You can seriously injure yourself or cause permanent damage with a few unnecessarily spirited jabs. A far safer and more effective solution is likely sitting in your kitchen cupboard right now: olive oil, a safe, natural way to dislodge stubborn wax. You only need a few drops in each ear. Follow this up with some warm water (in the shower works best). In addition to getting rid of the wax, it also lubricates the ear and helps develop natural (and necessary wax).

4. Nose Hair Check

Nose hairs are the unsung hero of the human body. They play an absolutely critical role in our daily lives – filtering the air we breathe, fighting the good fight for our general health from the confines of our noses – yet there’s something alarming about seeing a collection of stray hairs creeping out of an untrimmed nostril. If only nose hair was as beautiful as it is essential. Long story short: a decent nose, ear, and eyebrow trimmer is an inexpensive way to keep things under control. It’ll take less than a minute out of your day, once a week, and go a long way in keeping the dignity of your hair working nose hairs intact.

5. SPF-Infused Moisturizer

At the risk of sounding like a neurotic parent, we cannot emphasize the importance of sunscreen. Skin cancer is the most common variety in existence and San Diego is a pretty sunny place – you see the connection? For these especially toasty months, use an SPF-infused moisturizer that’ll keep your skin protected and soft. It’s not only about avoiding a major crisis like malignant melanoma; daily wear and tear from sun exposure adds up over the years, and will eventually start to show if you don’t look after your skin right now.

6. Supplement with a Spray Tan

Look, I didn’t want to go here. Spray tan is not the ideal solution to bronzing up before a romantic getaway to Cabo, but it’s a far safer (and saner) option than blitzing your skin for short-term results. If you’re feeling self-conscious about darning a speedo, using spray tan in song with a medium-strength SPF sunscreen (a 10-15) will help you develop a more natural, longer lasting tan that won’t cost you in the long run.

7. Chest and Back Hair

We get it: you work long hours, spend every extra minute with the kids, take care of the house and projects over the weekends. You probably can’t remember the last time you even looked at your back, let alone noticed the shag covering it. There’s nothing to be embarrassed about; this is the ideal time to make an appointment at 18|8, where we can take care of everything.

8. Get A Man-icure

As we take on more projects through the summer (veggie gardens, repainting old workshops, making tire swings), our hands take a beating. Before you show up at your next meeting with dirt under your nails, come and see us for a man-icure, the most surprisingly rejuvenating groom hack on this list. On top of a nail and cuticle treatment, every man-icure includes a hand and arm massage.

9. Tea-Tree Oil for Dandruff

Research shows that nearly 50% of men between the ages of 30 and 50 experience bouts of dandruff. Such is life. With all of the extra hours outdoors, and the copious amount of product some men use, a little flaking of the scalp is bound to happen. If you’re not into the smell of more conventional, over-the-counter shampoos, a few drops of tea-tree oil has been shown to sort out the dreaded ‘druff.

An excellent alternative is Paul Mitchell’s Tea Tree Special Shampoo. Natural tea tree oil and peppermint soothe the scalp, not to mention the fact that it just smells amazing. Come in and pick some up at the salon!

10. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate

Summertime means hot weather, more beers, and more sweating, so be sure to take in plenty of liquids throughout the day. It’s important to put back all the goodness you lose by staying active and healthy. Gatorade-type drinks are good since they can help to resupply electrolytes, but nothing tops a big glass of cold water. Sure, your looks are important, but your most important organs (heart, kidneys, liver – even your skin) need water to function healthily, so give it the best.
