Teffi (left) and Jessica of 18|8 San Diego

When you walk in to 18/8 San Diego, you come in expecting an incredible experience; whether that be a handcrafted haircut, straight razor shave, or facial treatment. Teffi and Jessica, our two incredibly talented San Diego native barbers, have been revolutionizing the male-dominated San Diego barber scene ever since they first tried their hand at the straight razor. Together, they’ve brought a passion and an unrivaled enthusiasm into our salon that continues to raise the bar and set us apart from your typical San Diego barbershop. Here’s your chance to learn more about them and why they do what they do – and what it took to get there.

Meet Teffi

Teffi was born in Poway, then went on to cosmetology school at Bellus Academy where she graduated in 2012. She got her first job in North County doing women’s hair, but when she tried the barbering program in 2015, Teffi instantly fell in love with it. She completed barber school and got an interview with 18/8 San Diego – and the rest is history! She’s now been working here for almost two years, and loves every minute of it. She loves the idea that men are getting time to themselves for a bit of pampering; it’s like a masculine spa day.

Teffi has always been dedicated to her craft, and it’s no surprise she has such a passion for what she does. When she was in school, a teacher asked everyone to try shaving a balloon; supposedly lathering on the shaving cream and trying not to pierce the balloon would provide some insight on how to shave. Instead, Teffi decided to shave her own face – and really get a feel for how it felt!

Some guys are wary of the ‘men’s salon’ atmosphere; they come in expecting to experience a scene straight out of Sweeney Todd and are a bit uneasy about the whole thing. Teffi encourages them to follow her advice and “respect, not fear, the razor.” Many, though, do enjoy the extra pampering  – it’s a few minutes to themselves in the middle of a busy day. With scented hot towels and a soothing neck and scalp massage at the end of every treatment, most clients are totally relaxed in no time. A lot of clients choose to add on an Executive Facial after a shave to soothe any irritation or redness.

As a female in a male-dominated industry, Teffi has experienced her share of adversity, but she just utilizes that as fuel to excel at her craft. Being taken seriously in this kind of industry is key, and she learned early on to develop a thick skin. One of the things she loves most about what she does is being able to handcraft a haircut completely, from start to finish. That ability is exactly what sets 18/8 San Diego apart from other San Diego barbershops and salons – you won’t receive just a run-of-the-mill cut or shave here. Teffi always uses a comb in addition to clippers, and takes her time to get every haircut just right; so don’t come in expecting to be in and out in 20 minutes!

Meet Jessica

Jessica grew up in San Diego and has had her cosmetology license since 2007. At first, she worked strictly with women’s hair; after a few years, she decided to change things up and eventually decided she enjoyed cutting men’s hair more. Jessica obtained her barbering license soon thereafter, and quickly fell in love with the atmosphere at 18/8 when she began work here just under two years ago. It was more relaxed, comfortable, and laid-back than the typical barbershop ambience, and because men’s haircuts are typically more frequent than women’s, she would see her clients every 3-4 weeks as opposed to once every few months. She loves being able to connect with the clients – it enables her to develop friendships and really get to know the people ‘in the chair.’

Jessica knew she wanted to cut hair from an early age. She began working in salons at age 15 and has been doing it professionally ever since. Her favorite task quickly became the straight razor shave – she loves how relaxing it is for her clients, and many of them have never experienced one before coming in to see her. Two products she never goes without? Griff’s pre-shave oil followed by their super-rich shaving cream (and for extra coarse hair, the Griff’s post-shave Balance Balm is a must).

Each stylist and barber at 18|8 San Diego undergoes extensive training and continued education, and every haircut or straight razor shave is truly an experience unlike any other Men’s hair salon in San Diego. It’s a place where men can relax after a long day, beer in hand and feet up. Come in and see why they are the best barbers in San Diego you will experience! We’re open from 10am-8pm Monday through Friday, and 9am-6pm Saturdays and Sundays. You can book online or give us a call at (858) 914-5418.
