It’s that time of the year where we begin to see mustaches and facial hair everywhere we look around San Diego. That’s because it’s No-Shave November, a time where men go an entire month without using a razor and donate the cost of grooming to a cancer fighting foundation. It’s widely celebrated but most people still don’t exactly know where it all began, and it often gets mixed up with Movember (yes, they are different!). Below we’ll break it down for you so you can spread the message!
The Story Behind No-Shave November
Some people say that No-Shave November was dubbed by Karl Marx in a celebration of communism. He encouraged beard growing during the month of November as a way to offend the bourgeoisie. Over a hundred years later this idea has carried on, but for completely different reasons.
In 2009, members of the Chicagoland Hill family decided to take the idea of No-Shave November and turn it into a nonprofit. Since it began, the organization has raised over $2 million dollars. The money goes towards cancer-fighting organizations and promoting cancer awareness. Many cancer patients lose their hair during treatment, so letting your hair grow wild and free all month long is a way to start the conversation and show your support for those struggling with this disease.
18|8 San Diego is a large supporter of No-Shave November. Our barbershop serves Northern San Diego, including 4S ranch, Rancho Bernardo, Rancho Santa Fe, Del Mar, and Encinitas so we encourage you to come in for all your grooming needs this November!
It’s also important to keep grooming your beard throughout the month and use beard oil and shampoo at least once a week. When November comes to an end, you’ll probably want a classic clean shave to finish off the month. Book your appointment online or give us a call at (858)-914-5418 for your clean shave!
