Nowadays there are a lot of options for men in regards to shaving. From high tech electric razors to bare bones straight razors there is something for everyone. Today I wanted to shed a little light on the difference between two of the most common ways to shave, disposable cartridges and straight razors.

Disposable Razors

Screen Shot 2016-08-11 at 3.48.35 PM These are the most common razors used by most men today. Disposable razors come in a variety of types from double edge safety razors to the more common 5 bladed cartridge razors which I will be focusing on today. The modern disposable razor is great for someone who is short on time and needs to shave in a pinch. The extra blades allow for you to quickly shave without having to go back and re shave. Because it is so quick and only one pass is needed there is a greater likelihood for razor burn. This is because instead of one blade going across your skin there are five, all at different levels to remove your facial hair. They are also not as sharp as a straight razor, making razor burn more likely.

Straight Razors

This is due to the fact that the razor has been professionally sharpened or honed by a skilled craftsmen and not by a machine. Straight razors are also more economical than disposable razors. You can buy a good straight razor for around $70-$100 that can last you a lifetime if you take care of it. This includes stropping your blade every time and having it honed by yourself or a professional about once a year. If you enjoy taking care of something and having a morning ritual, a straight razor is also a great choice. Unlike modern, disposable razors it takes time and patience to shave with a straight razor. You have to sharpen it on a leather strop before and after each use and during use you have to take care to shave without cutting yourself. When first learning to shave with a straight razor you will get a few nicks and cuts, but don’t worry. After some time you will get the hang of it and enjoy the smoothest shave possible.
