One of the most common gripes that men have is about their hairline (or lack thereof). Many guys spend countless hours lamenting the tragic state of their hair in addition to hoping, dreaming, and praying that their hair will magically come back. Not-so-coincidentally, most guys also spend about the exact same amount of time actively avoiding the gym and all forms of physical exercise (short of channel surfing, that is). As your trusted New Berlin, Brookfield, and Milwaukee barbershop – in addition to your bearer of bad news – we’d like to take this time to point out the positive effect that exercise can have on your hair.

So…Will Exercising Really Make My Hair Healthier?

Exercising is actually one of the most important factors for having both good health and good hair. When you exercise, you sweat. When you sweat, your body flushes out toxins and waste substances from the skin pores. While bodily sweat will help you attain more radiant skin, sweat coming from your scalp can help unclog hair follicles and make room for new ones to grow.

As an added benefit, exercising will increase the blood flow to your scalp. With an increased blood flow, your scalp will be the recipient of more nutrients and more oxygen. These provide nourishment to the hair roots and promote healthy hair growth.

But What If I Don’t Want to Exercise?

The blunt answer: Then your hair may fall out. Not all at once, but still!

Long-winded answer: When you’re stressed (as most of us are), your body will produce cortisone (stress hormones). Cortisone will affect your entire body, including your hair follicles. It can cause these follicles to stop growing, leading to hair loss. However, exercising will increase your levels of serotonin (the happy hormone!). Higher levels of serotonin will improve the way you deal with stress and lower the presence of cortisone.

Ultimately, that was really just a long-winded and jargon-filled way to say: get back to the gym!
