The history of the barbershop dates back as far as 5,000 B.C. In the Egyptian ages, barbers were using sharpened shells and tools that they made themselves in order to groom men and women. Since then, the duties of a barber have ranged far past simply cutting and shaving.

Barber Duties over the Years

As early as 900 B.C. barbers were expected to do much more than just cut and shave their customers. The profession was recognized as elite while the barbers gained the responsibility of being surgeons as well. Originating in France, barber-surgeons would dress wounds, perform dental treatments, and tend to patients in need in times of war or for general community care. Eventually the professions of barbers and surgeons separated.

Barbershop Pole

A reminder of this once, collaborated profession is the renowned barbershop pole. While not widely known, the pole’s colors iminate the once established barber-surgeon profession. The red represents blood, the white represents bandages, and the blue represents human veins. Though the professions have since parted ways, the everlasting appreciating of the old responsibilities stands strong across the entire world through the classic barbershop pole.

Culture

For years, barbershops have been a home to open communication. Early on, barbers would congregate in the middle of town squares and be a place of gossip while trimming men’s beards. Since then, open rooms with tiled floors have been renowned for a place to talk, share your experiences, and connect with your barber 1:1.

Barbershops Today

Today, barbers and their shops can usually be identified by the barber pole rooted outside of the front window or on the sidewalk. The history of barbershops extends further back than anyone could imagine. The commitment barbers have to their profession and surrounding communities is admirable and appreciated across their customers.
